Blueprinted PC Plastics

by Daniel McRoberts 11 July, 2016

Polycarbonate (PC) is a thermoplastic, it's strong and impact resistant (It's used in the making of bullet proof glass and compact discs) temperature resistant and it can be extruded (at the right temperature). It can be bent and formed while cold without cracking or deform and it is also very optically 'crystal' clear to visible light (opaque to UV light), but it's actually not very easy to keep it clear during extrusion.

Tensile strength (25 mm /min) - 75 MPa
Elongation at break (25mm /min - 110%
Flexural stress (2mm /min) -  90.2 MPa
Density - 1.20g/cm³
Approx. length / kg: 1.75mm - 350m | 2.85mm - 133m

PC while strong, is hygroscopic and will absorb moisture from the air. Leaving our PC filament out in the open air for extended period of time (longer than 4 weeks), you may experience issues when extruding.

Similiar to ABS, PC creates mild, tolerable fumes while being extruded. These fumes, while usually tolerable, may be dangerous for people (or pet birds) with chemical sensitivities or breathing difficulties. Eitherway, we recommend printing PC in a well ventilated area!

We will continue to work on new colours and materials which will provide excellent results!
